SAE AMS5589F is a specification developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) that defines seamless tubes made from Nickel-Chromium-Iron Alloy 600 (UNS N06600). This nickel-based superalloy is renowned for its exceptional resistance to high-temperature oxidation, corrosion, and mechanical strength, making it ideal for critical applications in aerospace, power generation, and chemical processing. 

Material Composition

Alloy 600 (UNS N06600), the base material for AMS5589F tubes, has a tightly controlled composition to ensure performance:

Nickel (Ni): 72% minimum (primary alloying element, providing corrosion resistance and high-temperature stability).
Chromium (Cr): 14–17% (enhances oxidation resistance, especially in high-temperature environments).
Iron (Fe): 6–10% (improves mechanical strength and workability).
Trace elements: Carbon (≤0.15%), Manganese (≤1.0%), Silicon (≤0.5%), Copper (≤0.5%), and Sulfur (≤0.015%).

This composition gives Alloy 600 excellent resistance to creep (deformation under sustained stress at high temperatures) and resistance to acids, alkalis, and chloride-induced corrosion—key for harsh service conditions.

AMS5590G tubes are available in both small and medium diameters, aligned with common industrial and aerospace needs. Typical ranges include:

Outer Diameter (OD): From 0.125 inches (3.175 mm) up to 8 inches (203.2 mm). Smaller diameters (e.g., 0.25–2 inches) are more common for aerospace fluid systems, while larger sizes may be used in industrial heat exchangers or piping.

Inner Diameter (ID): Determined by the wall thickness, which varies based on the OD. For example, a 1-inch OD tube with a 0.120-inch wall thickness has an ID of 0.76 inches (19.3 mm).

Applications

Aerospace: Fuel lines, hydraulic systems, and exhaust components in jet engines (resistant to high temps and fuel corrosion).

Nuclear Power: Steam generator tubing (resistant to radiation-induced embrittlement and coolant corrosion).

Chemical Processing: Piping for corrosive fluids (e.g., acids, alkalis) and high-temperature reactors.
