Strength Progression
P235GH → P355GH: Increasing carbon/manganese content enhances strength but reduces weldability
Yield strength increases by ~50% from P235GH to P355GH
Weldability Considerations
P235GH: Best weldability (lowest carbon equivalent = ~0.35)
P355GH: Requires preheat (>75°C) for thick sections (CE ~0.45)
All grades require post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) for thicknesses >35mm
Temperature Limitations
P235GH/P265GH: Not recommended for service >400°C (graphitization risk)
For >450°C service, consider 13CrMo4-5 (EN 10216-2) alloy steel
Impact Testing
"GH" suffix indicates suitability for elevated temperatures
"NL" grades (e.g., P355NL) are Charpy tested at -50°C for low-temp service
Dimensional Tolerances
OD: ±0.75% (hot-finished), ±0.5% (cold-drawn)
WT: +15%/-10% (standard), +10%/-5% (special tolerance)
| Application | Recommended Grade | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Low-pressure water pipelines | P235GH | Cost-effective |
| Medium-pressure steam boilers | P265GH | Balanced strength/weldability |
| High-pressure oil transmission | P295GH | Better strength than P265GH |
| Power plant steam headers | P355GH | Highest strength in EN 10216-1 |
| EN 10216-1 | ASTM Equivalent | Key Difference |
|---|---|---|
| P235GH | A106 Gr.A | Stricter P/S limits in EN |
| P265GH | A106 Gr.B | EN requires lower S content |
| P355GH | 5L X52 | EN has mandatory impact testing options |
Mandatory Tests:
Hydrostatic (test pressure = 70 bar for 10 sec)
Ultrasonic examination (for WT ≥6mm)
Tensile testing (each heat)
Optional Tests:
Charpy V-notch (for NL grades or client request)
Hardness testing
PMI (positive material identification)
