ASME SB677 TP904L/1.4539/UNS N08904 Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe
904L stainless steel material is a super austenitic stainless steel material, grade 00Cr20Ni25Mo4.5Cu, UNS: N08904, EN: 1.4539. It is a high alloyed austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content and has good corrosion resistance in dilute acid, designed specifically for environments with harsh corrosion conditions. It has a high chromium content and sufficient nickel content. The addition of copper gives it strong acid resistance, especially high resistance to chloride interstitial corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. It is highly resistant to corrosion spots and cracks, and has slightly better resistance to pitting compared to other steel grades. It has good machinability and weldability. Solid solution state without magnetism.
The chemical composition of 904L is C ≤ 0.03, Si ≤ 1.00, Mn ≤ 2.00, P ≤ 0.035, S ≤ 0.03, Ni: 23.0-25.0, Cr: 18.0-20.0, Mo: 3.0-4.0, Cu: 4.0-5.0. The minimum mechanical properties of 904L alloy at room temperature: alloy and state: 926, tensile strength (Rm N/mm2): 490, yield strength (RP0.2N/mm2): 216, elongation A5%: 35

These comparisons are approximate only. The list is intended as a comparison of functionally similar materials not as a schedule of contractual equivalents. If exact equivalents are needed original specifications must be consulted. |
Grade | Why it might be chosen instead of 904L |
316L | A lower cost alternative, but with much lower corrosion resistance. |
6Mo | A higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is needed. |
2205 | A very similar corrosion resistance, with the 2205 having higher mechanical strength, and at a lower cost to 904L. (2205 not suitable for temperatures above 300C.) |
Super duplex | Higher corrosion resistance is needed, together with a higher strength than 904L. |
