S235JRG2 is a non-alloy structural steel grade specified by EN 10025-2, known for its good weldability, formability, and moderate strength, making it suitable for general structural and industrial applications. The spiral welding technique allows for the production of large-diameter pipes efficiently, with consistent structural integrity. These pipes are cost-effective compared to seamless or straight-seam welded alternatives for large-scale projects, offering reliable performance in low to medium pressure and non-critical corrosive environments.
Size
- Outer Diameter (OD): Typically ranges from 219 mm (8.62 inches) to 3000 mm (118.11 inches), with flexibility to produce larger diameters based on project requirements.

- Wall Thickness: Generally 3 mm to 25 mm, with tight tolerances to ensure uniform structural performance. Thicker walls can be customized for higher load-bearing applications.

- Length: Standard lengths are 6 m, 12 m, or as per customer specifications (up to 18 m), with options for cut-to-length services. Ends are typically beveled for welding or fitted with flanges, couplings, or other connectors.
Testing
- Tensile Strength: 360–510 MPa.
- Yield Strength: ≥235 MPa (at 16 mm thickness; slightly lower for thicker sections).
- Elongation: ≥25% (ensures ductility for forming and handling).
- Impact Testing: Charpy V-notch test at 20°C, with a minimum impact energy of 27 J (confirms toughness for structural safety).
- Weld Quality Testing:
- Visual Inspection: Checks for weld seam uniformity, surface defects, and dimensional accuracy.
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT): Detects internal or subsurface defects in the weld seam and base metal.
- Radiographic Testing (RT): Used for critical applications to inspect weld integrity and detect hidden flaws.

S235JRG2 is a low-carbon steel with the following typical chemical composition (by weight):
- Carbon (C): ≤0.20% (ensures good weldability and ductility).
- Manganese (Mn): 0.40–1.20% (enhances strength and workability).
- Silicon (Si): ≤0.30% (aids deoxidation during manufacturing).
- Sulfur (S): ≤0.045% (limits brittleness, critical for weld integrity).
- Phosphorus (P): ≤0.040% (controls ductility and reduces the risk of cold cracking).
- Trace elements: Iron (Fe) as the base metal, with minimal residual elements (e.g., copper, nickel) to maintain material purity.
