ASTM A312 TP304/316L/310S Seamless Tubes
ASTM A312 Standard: Specifies requirements for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubes for high-temperature and general corrosive service.
Grades Covered:
TP304: A basic austenitic stainless steel (18% Cr, 8% Ni) with excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and weldability.
TP316L: A low-carbon variant of TP316 (16-18% Cr, 10-14% Ni, 2-3% Mo), offering enhanced resistance to chlorides and acidic environments.
TP310S: High-temperature grade (25% Cr, 20% Ni) with superior oxidation resistance and creep strength at elevated temperatures (up to 1150°C).
Element | TP304 | TP316L | TP310S |
---|---|---|---|
Chromium | 18-20 | 16-18 | 24-26 |
Nickel | 8-10.5 | 10-14 | 19-22 |
Molybdenum | - | 2-3 | - |
Carbon | ≤0.08 | ≤0.03 | ≤0.08 |
Grade | Tensile Strength (MPa) | Yield Strength (MPa) | Elongation (%) |
---|---|---|---|
TP304 | ≥515 | ≥205 | ≥35 |
TP316L | ≥485 | ≥170 | ≥35 |
TP310S | ≥515 | ≥205 | ≥40 |
TP304: Resists organic acids, nitric acid, and mildly corrosive environments. Limited use in chloride-rich settings.
TP316L: Superior pitting/crevice corrosion resistance in marine, chemical, and acidic environments due to Mo content.
TP310S: Optimized for high-temperature oxidation (e.g., furnace parts, heat exchangers).
Seamless Tube Production: Hot extrusion or cold drawing followed by solution annealing (e.g., 1040-1120°C for TP304/316L) to dissolve carbides and restore corrosion resistance.
Surface Finish: Annealed/pickled or polished surfaces per ASTM A480.
Testing: Hydrostatic testing, eddy current (ET), or ultrasonic testing (UT) per ASTM A312 requirements.
TP304: Food processing equipment, architectural trim, pharmaceutical tubing, and low-temperature applications.
TP316L: Offshore platforms, chemical reactors, desalination plants, and medical devices.
TP310S: Heat treatment furnaces, radiant tubes, boiler components, and ethylene cracking units.
Complies with ASME SA312 for pressure applications.
Certifications: EN 10204-3.1/3.2, NACE MR0175 (for sour service), and PED 2014/68/EU (Category II).
Seamless Design: Eliminates weld weaknesses, ensuring uniform strength.
Cost-Efficiency: TP304 is economical for general use; TP316L balances cost and performance in harsh environments.
Customization: Available in sizes from 1/8" to 24" OD, with wall thicknesses tailored to project needs.
TP304/316L are unsuitable for prolonged high-temperature service (>400°C for TP304; >550°C for TP316L).
TP310S has lower room-temperature ductility compared to TP304/316L.
