Product Description

Product Description

ASTM SA179 Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe Product

1. Standard Specification

ASTM SA179 (equivalent to ASTM A179, with "S" in SA denoting compliance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code) is a standard that specifically covers seamless cold - drawn low - carbon steel tubes for tubular heat exchangers, condensers, and similar heat transfer apparatus. This standard ensures that the pipes meet certain quality and performance requirements, which are crucial for their application in heat - related equipment.

2. Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of ASTM SA179 seamless carbon steel pipe is designed to provide the necessary properties for its intended use. The following table shows the typical chemical composition limits:
Element
Content (%)
Carbon (C)
0.06 - 0.18
Manganese (Mn)
0.27 - 0.63
Phosphorus (P)
≤ 0.035
Sulfur (S)
≤ 0.035
Carbon content affects the strength and hardness of the steel. The relatively low carbon range in SA179 steel (0.06 - 0.18%) helps to maintain good formability and weldability, which are important for the cold - drawing process and for use in heat exchanger applications where the tubes may need to be joined. Manganese contributes to the strength and hardenability of the steel, while also helping to deoxidize the steel during the manufacturing process. Phosphorus and sulfur are considered impurities, and their low maximum limits (≤ 0.035% each) are set to prevent embrittlement and ensure the overall quality and performance of the steel.

3. Mechanical Properties

The mechanical properties of ASTM SA179 seamless carbon steel pipes are as follows:
Property
Value
Tensile Strength (MPa)
≥ 325
Yield Strength (MPa)
≥ 180
Elongation (%)
≥ 35
Hardness (HRB)
≤ 72
The minimum tensile strength of 325 MPa indicates that the pipe can withstand a certain amount of pulling force without breaking. The yield strength of at least 180 MPa ensures that the pipe can resist permanent deformation under normal operating loads. The high elongation percentage (≥ 35%) shows that the steel has good ductility, which is beneficial for the cold - drawing manufacturing process and also for the pipes' ability to withstand some degree of stress without cracking. The maximum hardness limit of HRB ≤ 72 ensures that the material is not too hard, which could otherwise cause difficulties in forming and joining operations.

4. Dimensions

4.1 Outer Diameter

The standard covers tubes with an outside diameter (OD) ranging from 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) to 3 inches (76.2 mm). However, it should be noted that mechanical property requirements do not apply to tubing with an outside diameter smaller than 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) or a wall thickness under 0.015 inches (0.4 mm). The following table shows the outside diameter tolerances:
Outside Diameter (mm)
Tolerance (mm)
3.2 ≤ OD < 25.4
± 0.10
25.4 ≤ OD ≤ 38.1
± 0.15
38.1 < OD < 50.8
± 0.20
50.8 ≤ OD < 63.5
± 0.25
63.5 ≤ OD < 76.2
± 0.30
76.2
± 0.38

4.2 Wall Thickness

The wall thickness of ASTM SA179 pipes can vary, and the following table shows the wall thickness tolerances based on the outside diameter:
Outside Diameter (mm)
Tolerance (%)
3.2 ≤ OD < 38.1
+ 20 / - 0
38.1 ≤ OD ≤ 76.2
+ 22 / - 0

4.3 Length

The pipes are available in various lengths, such as 5800 mm, 6000 mm, 6096 mm, 7315 mm, 11800 mm, etc. Custom lengths can also be specified according to customer requirements. For cut lengths up to and including 24 ft (7.3 m), the length tolerance is as follows:
Outside Diameter (in. / mm)
Cut Length (in. / mm)
Tolerance Over (+) (in. / mm)

All sizes
3/16 (5)
0 (0)

Under 2 (50.8)
1/8 (3)
0 (0)

2 (50.8) and over
3/16 (5)
0 (0)

For lengths greater than 24 ft (7.3 m), the over - tolerances shall be increased by 1/8 in. (3 mm) for each 10 ft (3 m) or fraction thereof over 24 ft or 1/2 in. (13 mm), whichever is the lesser.

5. Manufacturing Process

Tubes of ASTM SA179 are made by the seamless process and then cold - drawn. After the final cold - draw pass, the tubes are heat - treated at a temperature of 1200 °F (650 °C) or higher. This heat - treatment process helps to relieve internal stresses, improve the mechanical properties, and ensure the dimensional stability of the tubes.

6. Applications

Due to its characteristics, ASTM SA179 seamless carbon steel pipe is widely used in the following fields:
  • Heat Exchangers: It is a common choice for tubular heat exchangers in various industries such as petrochemicals, power generation, and manufacturing. The good heat - transfer properties of the low - carbon steel, combined with its mechanical strength and corrosion resistance (to a certain extent), make it suitable for transferring heat between different fluids.
  • Condensers: In refrigeration systems, power plants, and air - conditioning units, SA179 pipes are used as condenser tubes. They can effectively transfer heat from the refrigerant or steam to the cooling medium, facilitating the condensation process.
  • Sugar Mills & Distilleries: In these industries, the pipes are used in equipment related to heat transfer processes, such as evaporators and condensers, which are crucial for the production of sugar and alcoholic beverages.
  • Cement and Construction Industries: Although not as commonly used as in heat - transfer - specific applications, SA179 pipes may be used in some construction - related heat - transfer systems or in equipment where a combination of strength and heat - transfer capabilities is required.

7. Testing

To ensure the quality and performance of ASTM SA179 seamless carbon steel pipes, several tests are carried out:
  • Chemical Analysis: Heat and product analysis are performed to confirm that the steel materials conform to the required chemical compositions of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur.
  • Mechanical Tests: This includes hardness test, flattening test, flaring test, flange test, and hydrostatic test. The hydrostatic test is carried out on each tube to ensure its pressure - bearing capacity. In some cases, a substitute non - destructive electric test can be used instead of the hydrostatic test.
  • Dimensional Inspection: The outer diameter, wall thickness, and length of the pipes are inspected to ensure they meet the specified tolerances.

8. Marking

ASTM SA179/ASME SA179 tubes shall be marked according to the standard of A450. The marking typically includes the product name and order number, which helps in traceability and identification throughout the supply chain.
